Over the last 15 years that I’ve been “fishing in the marketing waters”, what I see as one of the biggest mistake that people make when trying to grow their business, is they get caught up in marketing tactics.
- Do I use Facebook ads?
- Do I use SEO?
- Do I go to 10 networking events per month?
That’s actually the wrong way to think about things. It’s back to front thinking.
Because if you don’t have the proper foundations in place, like a crystal clear understanding of your ideal client, the problem they want solved, and how you communicate your unique solution…
It doesn’t matter what tactics you use. Without these foundations in place, no tactic is likely to work as well as it should.
But even once you have those foundations in place, how do you make sure that you have a predictable and consistent way of getting in front of potential clients, in a way that doesn’t have you running around like Tasmanian Devil, trying to do everything and yet getting very little to show for it other than a bit of a mess?
Having A System For Your Marketing Becomes A Literal Life Saver.
Every large, successful or mature business is run by systems, not by the owner. You don’t see Richard Branson answering customer service calls do you?
Systems allow you to duplicate your sales and marketing activities and scale them.
I know the word “system” scares many people. But seriously, you don’t need to be ‘technical’ to take advantage of them.
Really all systems are is writing down how you do stuff, then setting process up that gets it done. That’s basically it.
Yet the vast majority of us aren’t wired to create “systems”. The strategic blueprints that get us where we want to be, without going off the deep end with no clear idea of what we’re trying to achieve.
Which is why when it comes to your marketing, you need a roadmap for the journey you take your potential clients on. One that is the same every time, so it’s consistent and predictable.
Very few businesses have this, as the majority never go through the thought process needed to make it possible.

It’s really just a series of steps…
- Let’s say you get in front of someone who could benefit from your services.
- What happens next?
- Then what happens?
- And what happens after that?
You might have 4, 5, 6 steps that takes someone who goes “oh I’m interested in that”, to knowing you actually help them or not, and all the way to becoming a client.
To do this, first, think about when someone’s looking to for a solution to the problem that you solve.
- What questions are they asking?
- Where are they looking for answers?
- Who has those people in their sphere of influence already?
Then think about how you could create something that offers to solve part of that problem, quickly, and turn that into a piece of information that you can offer them for free, in exchange for their contact information.
Next, think about how can you follow up and nurture them.
- How can you continue to educate them on the problem you solve.
- How can you show them that you are the right solution?
Once you’ve done that, think about how do you get them to book an appointment.
- What’s the process you take them through?
- Do you pre-qualify them or take every appointment?
Finally, think about how you make a sale when you’re in front of someone.
- Do you have a structure to your appointments?
- Or do you let the client take the lead?
- What objections do they have and do you deal with them upfront?
This is your complete Marketing Roadmap to how you attract and catch clients. Your Client Catching System.
Having this system is your foundation that then gives you the opportunity to try different marketing tactics, with much more confidence that they’ll actually work.
The Mistake That People Make Is They Think That Marketing Is About The Tactics.
Things like Facebook ads, get ranked number 1 on Google, or running adverts in various places…
Yes, these will get you attention.
But they aren’t the magic bullet that will make your marketing work.
They’re just one part.
Yet this tends to be the part where most effort, time and money is spent, and sadly wasted.
What Makes Your Marketing Work Is What Happens Underneath The Surface.
Your foundation. Your system.
And that’s why it has to get built first.
Without this in place none of the tactics you try are going to be anywhere near as effective, and you create so much more work than you need to.
It’s probably why most people don’t market their business anywhere to the extent that they should. They’re not consistent, because they know they’re actually creating more work for themselves.
Have A Look At Your Business
- Do you have a way to get people to raise their hand?
- Do you have a way to be able to capture people.
- Do you have a way to educate, nurture and train those people how good you are?
- Do you have a way to them qualify them when they ask for an appointment?
- Do you have a way to be able to sell to them?
Don’t worry if you don’t like the answers you come up with. It doesn’t matter where you are today.
What matters is that you commit to building the pieces of your own Client Catching Ecosystem that makes marketing and sales, and your life, easier for you.
Because when you put a system in place, your marketing and sales becomes far less daunting and so much more simple. You set it up once, then it will happen without you.
That’s where you want to get to.
Where you can be doing whatever you want. Taking a day off when you feel like it, knowing leads and clients will still be coming in because you have a system in place doing this for you.
